Step deeper into the world of Outlander on this exclusive luxury day tour — exploring a set of filming locations distinct from the classic Outlander circuit, and venturing into the lesser-known eastern and coastal sites that brought Season 2’s French storylines vividly to life in Scotland. For the dedicated fan who has already explored the headline locations, or for first-time visitors who want to see it all, this is an unmissable chapter in the Outlander story.
For the uninitiated: Outlander is the story of Claire Randall, a World War Two nurse who is mysteriously swept back in time to 18th-century Scotland, where she meets Jacobite warrior Jamie Fraser in the turbulent years leading up to the 1745 uprising. The series has been filmed extensively across Scotland, and the locations on this tour span two continents — at least on screen.
Travel in comfort aboard our new Mercedes V-Class Avantgarde, guided by Johnny Dreczkowski MBE — honoured by His Majesty The King in June 2025 — a proud Scot and professional driver-guide renowned for his storytelling, attention to detail, and authentic Scottish hospitality.
🏛️ Hopetoun House – Home of the Duke of Sandringham
Begin your eastern Outlander adventure at Hopetoun House — Scotland’s grandest stately home and one of the most magnificent country houses in the United Kingdom. Set in sweeping parkland just ten miles west of Edinburgh, this palatial 18th-century masterpiece was the perfect stand-in for the fictional residence of the Duke of Sandringham — one of Outlander’s most memorable and treacherous characters. With its breathtaking baroque architecture, lavishly decorated State Apartments, and manicured formal grounds, Hopetoun is a world of aristocratic splendour that needs no fictional embellishment.
Hopetoun House is open to visitors during the summer season — your itinerary will be adjusted for winter visits.
🏡 Midhope Castle – Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s Home
Within the Hopetoun estate stands Midhope Castle — the exterior filming location for Lallybroch, the beloved ancestral home of Jamie Fraser. This evocative 16th-century towerhouse, partially extended and now romantically derelict, is perhaps the most emotionally resonant location for Outlander fans anywhere in Scotland. Walk the cobbled lane to the castle entrance — the very gateway where some of the series’ most powerful and harrowing scenes were filmed, including the infamous flogging of Jamie — and stand in the place where the heart of the Fraser story was told.
Please note: access is to the exterior and courtyard only, subject to estate restrictions and any active filming schedules. If you are booking both this tour and our main Outlander Locations Tour, we will substitute Midhope with one of our exclusive secret locations instead — ask us for details at the time of booking.
⚓ Dysart Harbour – Le Havre, France (Season 2)
Travel across the Forth into the Kingdom of Fife to discover one of Outlander’s most surprisingly perfect stand-ins. The sleepy, picturesque harbour of Dysart — tucked into the northern shore of the River Forth — doubled as the port of Le Havre, France, for Season 2’s opening scenes. It is here that Claire, Jamie, and Murtagh arrive in France aboard The Reaper, beginning their ill-fated mission to prevent the Jacobite uprising at its source. Standing on the ancient harbour walls, with the Forth stretching before you, it takes only a moment to understand why the production chose this quietly magical place.
🏘️ Falkland – Inverness, 1940s (Season 1 & 2)
Continue to the remarkably preserved Royal Burgh of Falkland — the charming Fife town that stood in for 1940s Inverness throughout the series. It is here that Frank Randall encounters the mysterious Highland figure outside Mrs. Baird’s guesthouse — a ghostly presence that sets the entire story in motion. Wander the cobbled streets, admire the handsome period architecture, and look out for the locations that Outlander fans the world over have come to recognise instantly.
At the heart of Falkland stands Falkland Palace — a stunning Renaissance royal residence built around 1500 primarily as a hunting lodge for the Stuart monarchs. Mary Queen of Scots spent much of her childhood here, and the palace’s tennis court is the oldest still in use in Britain. The real history of Falkland is every bit as compelling as the fiction.
🕍 Aberdour Castle – The Abbey of Saint Anne de Beaupré, France (Season 1)
Your final Outlander destination is the beautiful and atmospheric Aberdour Castle — one of the oldest standing castles in Scotland, dating from the 12th century — which served as the Abbey of Saint Anne de Beaupré, the fictional Benedictine monastery on the northern coast of France. It is here that Claire and Murtagh bring a broken Jamie following his brutal imprisonment and torture at Wentworth Prison — and where Claire uses extraordinary measures to draw him back from the darkness. The castle’s ancient stone walls, tranquil terraced gardens, and serene setting made it the perfect embodiment of monastic peace and refuge.
Beyond its Outlander role, Aberdour Castle is a genuinely fascinating historic site — with a rare 12th-century tower, a beautifully restored walled garden, and a remarkable beehive dovecot that has stood for centuries. A hidden gem of Scottish heritage that deserves to be far better known.

Depart from your accommodation in Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Stirling and journey through two of Scotland’s most captivating regions — the grand estate country west of Edinburgh and the ancient coastal Kingdom of Fife. This private tour is tailored for the Outlander fan who wants to go deeper — beyond the headline locations and into the quieter, more surprising corners of Scotland that the series immortalised on screen.
Clients are collected directly from their accommodation and returned at the end of the day, ensuring a seamless door-to-door experience. As you travel, Johnny weaves together the Outlander storylines with the genuine history behind every location — the Jacobite cause, the Stuart monarchs, the fishing communities of Fife — bringing both the fiction and the reality to life with equal passion.
Enjoy a curated Outlander-inspired Scottish playlist or your own selection throughout the day, and look forward to a couple of traditional Scottish sweet treats along the way.
